The Success Paradox: Why 90s Grit is Failing the 2026 Leader

3–5 minutes

Most leaders with a high-performance mindset excel at running profitable business operations, optimizing their workdays to the minute, and climbing the career ladder. And while their LinkedIn profiles and resumes showcase all their successes and achievements, many of them still feel like they’re losing, falling behind, or that they need to do better.

This is a never-ending battle, and more often than not, the high-performers try to win by putting in even more effort, time, and sacrifice. But the problem has never been their commitment and effort. The problem is that they are running an operating system from 1995, while trying to survive 2026.

Let’s face it, the world has changed since then.

Why the 90s’ Mentality Fails in 2026

Technology has disrupted the way we work and live. We are connected 24/7, AI is being implemented to handle more and more tasks, creating both a sense of uncertainty and overload. The demands and expectations are through the roof, while we are stretching ourselves further and further to meet those expectations.

At the same time, research shows that well-being is recognised as a driver for performance. And even though many companies are implementing various initiatives, burnout rates remain high among the workforce, and AI development is creating a rising level of anxiety.

I think it’s safe to say that the 90s’ beliefs in hard work and stability are no longer feasible.

Making the Shift to 2026

So how can you thrive in such unpredictable and straining conditions?

Think of it like a disruption in the marketplace. The high-achievers who keep doing what they’ve always done burn out and are the ones left behind. The high-achievers who adapt to the new conditions, are willing to change, and open to trying something new, are the ones likely to survive and thrive in the new environment.

Disrupting our old operating system enables us to refocus and adapt to the new environment and build our lives so that we don’t just survive but thrive in it. It’s shifting the weight from working hard to become successful to actually feeling successful in life. It’s about taking back control instead of reacting to outside forces. It’s about switching out beliefs like:

  • If I work hard, I’ll be successful
  • If I reach X, then I’ll be happy
  • I’ll have time for family, hobbies & passion project later
  • A good education guarantees a good job

To switch out these beliefs, you have to ask yourself questions that allow you to explore more supportive perspectives. Sometimes this means unlearning what you’ve learned as a kid or questioning the status quo.

The aim is to reframe these beliefs to ones that empower and support you. Here are some example questions to start with:

  • What does success mean to me?
  • How can I incorporate moments of happiness into my everyday life?
  • Why shouldn’t I have time for family, hobbies & passion projects now?
  • Is another certificate taking me closer to my goals?

Take one question and write down your answer on a piece of paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be convenient, it doesn’t even have to be the final version. But it must be true to you.

Consider this your first step to updating your internal operating system to 2026.

Refocus is the New Golden Rule

And I’m guessing that you’re wondering right about now, how all this is going to help with the constant change and uncertainty that we are surrounded by? Well, it doesn’t.

At the end of the day, the world will keep spinning, the surroundings will keep changing, and AI will keep on improving. That’s inevitable. And it can be triggering, I get it.

But these things are out of our control.

What we can control is how we react, think, and feel about these. Asking these questions and updating your internal operating system helps you focus on what’s in your control. It brings you a sense of peace, achievement, and alignment. It helps you cope with and navigate the change and uncertainty.

Not by fighting harder, but by refocusing on what truly matters to you.

The disruption starts with a single choice. Are you ready to stop performing your life and start leading it? I’d love to hear which ‘old belief’ you are deleting today.
