Catching Sunrises

3–4 minutes

Slow down, take a deep breath, and emerge in the wonders around you.

Have you ever caught yourself staring at a sunrise without a worry on your mind?

This recently happened to me as I was sipping on my morning coffee and taking a glimpse out of the window. Before I knew it, I was captivated by the rising sun.

All the noises around me faded and my mind calmed down. No more racing thoughts, not a worry on my mind — simply peace and quiet. I had let go of everything and was fully immersed in the beauty of the sunrise.

It reminded me of the times when I was younger. The times when we’d stay up for a bit longer just to catch the sunrise. We‘d walk down to the shore, and sit there silently watching the darkness slowly fade away as the sun peaked from the horizon.

At first, you’d see a deep purple sky, then a fiery red, followed by a warm orange until the sun’s rays hit the ground and lit up our surroundings. It was mesmerizing. In those moments nothing else mattered.

It was a simple yet meaningful moment. A moment of beauty, calmness, and connection. Not only a connection we shared with each other but also a connection with the world around us.

No worry seemed big enough to matter at that moment. No matter what was going on in our lives. It was all good.

Fast forward to today, this was a much-needed wake-up call. I had been so focused on my career, juggling everyday life and worrying about all the things to come, that I wasn’t really living at all. Rather, life was just passing by as I sat in my bullet train racing towards the future.

Way too often, we are busy worrying about what will happen in the future or stuck replaying a scene from the past, that we miss out on the present moment. Our minds are racing a hundred miles per hour and at the same time, all the small beautiful things slip away unnoticed.

But the thing is, life is what happens now. We can only really control this moment. Tomorrow will come no matter what we do right now. And the past is already gone. There’s nothing we can do to change it either. No matter how much we think about it.

Somehow, I keep forgetting this. Maybe occasionally you have, too?

So, I made myself a promise. A promise to slow down, enjoy the beauty of the world and experience the awe. A promise to fully emerge in the wonders around us, to be inspired by them and to appreciate them. A promise to be present in these beautiful moments.

And I invite you to do the same whether it’s watching the sun, moon or the stars in the night sky, and wondering about the mysteries of the universe. Or listening to the waves rhythmically crash into the shore, tasting the salt in the ocean air or feeling the fresh breeze on your skin in the early morning hours. Maybe it’s the sweet scent of the colorful flowers in your garden or the sounds of the birds singing in the woods.

Anything can serve as a reminder to slow down, take a deep breath, and emerge in the wonders around you. Allow yourself to take this moment to calm your mind and release the tension in your muscles. Let go of all the stress, expectations, and worries. Focus on your senses and let them guide you in this moment. Appreciate it, indulge in it, and then — carry on.

What Is Talent Hushing — And What It Is Quietly Costing You

Talent hushing is a new term for an old pattern — employees staying silent at work not because they have nothing to contribute, but because speaking up does not feel safe, worthwhile or effective. Only 3 in 10 employees strongly agree that their opinions count at work. This post is about the individual cost of…

What Are You Actually Afraid Of?

It comes out as a joke at the end of a meeting. Soon I will be out of a job anyway. Nobody picks it up, and the room moves on. One in three workers are thinking it, and almost none of them say it out loud.
